FAQ

Who and what I treat

Traditional East Asian therapies are for anyone who wants to feel healthier.

They could be having troubling symptoms or they might be in good shape but want to continue to be so and reduce the likelihood of getting ill. Whatever the condition acupuncture, shiatsu and traditional herbal formulas can help the body to make the best of what it’s got.

For many problems of a functional nature this might be all that is required, in more serious cases of organic disease traditional East Asian therapies can be used alongside Western medicine to strengthen the body’s ability to cope with the effects of medication as well as fighting illness.

Typical conditions for which acupuncture, herbal medicine, or shiatsu may be found to be helpful include:

  • Pain conditions including; back pain, sciatica, neck and shoulder pain, joint pain [including tennis elbow, golfers elbow], knee pain, finger joint pain, also trapped nerves, muscles spasm, tooth pain, menstrual pain, headaches, migraines
  • Other kinds of muscluloskeletal problems such as arthritis, cramp, sports injuries,
  • Fatigue and general low energy whether from conditions such as ME, recovery from cancer treatments or other long term illness, also lack of motivation, depression, low libido etc
  • Digestive problems such as nausea, lack of appetite, constipation, diarrhoea, hiatus hernia, IBS, flatulance
  • Hormonal problems such as thyroid, polycystic ovaries
  • Psychological disharmony such as anxiety, depression, stress, sleep problems, palpitations
  • GYN conditions such as infertility, menstrual irregularity, menstrual pain, PMT,
  • Urinary conditions such as cystitis, urinary infections, nocturia, enuresis
  • Men's problems such as erectile problems, low sperm count etc
  • Low immunity, colds, flus, and ongoing poor recovery from colds and respiratory conditions, coughs, phlegm etc.
  • Other respiratory and cardio vascular conditions such as asthma, shortnes of breath, poor circulation, palpitations
  • Numbness, facial paralysis, Bell's Palsy,
  • Skin problems such as eczems, acne etc

How exactly traditional medicine manages to treat these conditions is an ongoing debate, by all means do a little research your selves and get in touch if you have any questions. In general we consider that acupuncture and herbal medicine are able to help regulate the body's functioning to bring about a greater efficiency in its 'internal house keeping' which in turn leads to increased wellbeing and better health. The list above is a range of typical conditions that I have seen or typically present in patients coming for acupuncture.

Though the viewpoint of the acupuncturist is focussed on the patient and not the 'biomedical condtion' so the list is a only a guide; it doesnt mean that you cant be helped if your condition is not on the list, and of course just because you are on the list there is no guarantee that your condition will be fixed either! Similarly there are no hard and fast rules as to how long it will take, whether improvements will be suddern or gradual or what form the treatment will take. Everyone is different and the treatment has to fit each individual, no two sciaticas or carpal tunnels or IBS cases are the same!
